I keep hearing people tell me I won’t be able to receive a Cal Grant for having a house in Irvine, CA. I suppose the area is fairly nice, but not THAT great. My family still really needs the money because my sister will be applying for college soon too. If I can’t get a Cal Grant do you know any other scholarships or grants that could give me just as much money?
Here’s the link to the eligibility requirements for a Cal Grant: http://www.calgrants.org/index.cfm?navId=12
I don’t see anything that lists if you live in Irvine you won’t be eligible. Is the house the primary residence, or is it rental property? If it’s rental property, it may be seen as an asset and maybe that’s why you’re getting that information. It doesn’t hurt to apply, especially if after looking at the eligibility factors you qualify. Good luck!
What are some good MIlitary Boarding Schools in the U.S that offer full scholarships. Im already in a military organization, and Im 15 years old almost 16. I have a 3.8 GPA I play every Sport, and I’m very intrested in going to the USNA (Annapolis).
collegefinder.my-age.net – try this site. It has info about different US scholarships for college students and their grades requirements.
My husband and I are overseas in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I’ve already got some credits for my degree, but we can’t afford for me to keep going, since we’re recieving NO financial aid what so ever. I have heard that we might be able to use his GI bill now, but I really don’t want to use it, incase he wants to continue his education after he’s done in the navy. Do you know of any scholarships or grants that I could apply for? Thanks!
One: The Post 9/11 GI Bill is transferable as of August 1st. He can transfer *part* of it to you, if you don’t want to use the whole thing. If he qualifies, he is entitled up to 36 months. If you already have some credits, you probably won’t be needing all 36 months of it.
Two: In some states there is the Veteran’s Disability benefit. In California for example, if he has just 0% (yes that is a zero) disability after retirement he is eligible for full free tuition to any public college. This is also transferable.
The two methods cannot be used *at the same time*. But they can both be used. Also, make sure you check what institutions qualify for either of the programs overseas.
Admittedly, the Post 9/11 is a better deal, since it also covers certain private and proprietary institutions under the Yellow Ribbon Program, not to mention books stipend and housing allowance. But tuition is typically the bulk of the cost.
So here’s an option: use part of the Post 9/11 GI Bill for yourself now, and use the Disability tuition aid for himself later.
Other than that, search for scholarships at the military.com website:
http://aid.military.com/scholarship/search-for-scholarships.do?ESRC=ggl_edu_sch.kw
But beware with scholarships and grants. In many cases, it is quite difficult to qualify/win the money they offer and on top of that you have to re-enter every year to keep getting that money. With the GI Bill, you only need to apply once and just verify your attendance.
Barack Obama meets with young Iraq war veterans.
——————————————–
Barack Obama stopped by Walter Reed Army Medical Center Saturday to visit wounded war veterans, a group that he has said endures substandard care under the Bush administration.
The presumed Democratic nominee, who was in Washington to speak to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, spent about two hours inside the facility. On his way in and out, he did not speak to the small group of reporters who follow him, and the visit wasn’t on his public schedule.
Obama has criticized the Bush administration for its treatment of veterans returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and has suggested Republican rival John McCain would continue Bush policies if elected.
The administration was roundly criticized last year after it was revealed that veterans at Walter Reed were housed in rundown accommodations and suffered neglectful care.
Obama has said the country has failed its veterans by allowing such “second-rate conditions,” by not giving troops enough time at home and not doing enough to support military families.
During his remarks later Saturday before the Latino group, Obama said “we have to treat our veterans better.”
“We’re betraying what I think is a solemn pact that we make with our veterans,” he said.
And in a speech at a rally with his former Democratic opponent Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday, Obama said voters have a choice about whether to continue spending billions of dollars every month in Iraq, and leave troops there for 20 years, 50 years or 100 years _ a line that elicited boos from the crowd.
On veterans issues, McCain is seen by his supporters as having the advantage of military experience _ the Arizona senator was a Navy pilot, and spent nearly six years as a Vietnam prisoner of war after he was shot down.
Obama, who serves on the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, often notes that his grandfather served in World War II.
He criticizes McCain for opposing an expansion of the GI bill to guarantee full college scholarships for those who serve in the military for three years. McCain and Pentagon officials say they oppose the bill because they fear it would encourage people to leave after only one enlistment during a war.

Wesley Clark discusses “A Time to Lead.”
Wesley Clark sought the presidency during the 2004 elections, seeking to bring a less hawkish perspective to the White House. After the campaign, Clark did not end his crusade for what he sees as a better America, one that supports his vision of a responsible foreign policy. He believes that hard work, leadership and determination will ultimately turn the country around. – The Commonwealth Club
Wesley Clark is a retired four-star general of the United States Army. Clark was valedictorian of his class at West Point, was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford where he earned a master’s degree in economics, and later graduated from the Command and General Staff College with a master’s degree in military science.
