collegefinder.yoll.net – try this site. It has info about different US scholarships for college students and their grades requirements.
I am a junior at a high school in West Tennessee. I am currently the top student in my class and I am active in several activities outside of school.
My dream is to go to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and major in Motion Picture and Television. The annual budget for an undergraduate student is around $31,000.
My parents make a little over $100,00 annually, but they have told me that they cannot afford to pay for much of my college. In between scholarships, grants, work-study and small student loans, would it be entirely unrealistic of me to raise enough money each year.
I am incredibly uncertain about the scholarship scene, how easy it is to win money, and whether or not it could cover a fraction of the costs. My dream is to attend this school, and I would be willing to do whatever it took to accomplish my goal.
I’ve gained an impressive collection of bookmarks to scholarship searching websites, but I’m looking for a real-world answer. Thanks!
You will have the most luck at scholarships going directly to this school and asking them. Because of your parents high income, I doubt you would qualify for grants or work study at any school.
I also worry that most outside sources of scholarships will not be impressed with your school choice the "Academy of Art" does not exactly scream Academia. Sorry – just real world answer and option for all it’s worth. Have at least 5 schools with varying degrees of cost if you can’t come up with scholarships that will go anywhere and not just the school that issues them. Make sure you list state schools as well if your folks aren’t going to help you.
Also a word of warning about an expensive school like this, even if you do manage to scrape together 30,000 for your first year, you will have to continue doing it for the next 3 years. Kids are sometimes so pleased they accomplished this the first year they forget they are going to have to keep doing it and drop out after a year or two for lack of funds… then they are a drop out with a debt of 60K and nothing to show for it but loan payments they can’t afford.

Jonah’s Gourd Vine: A Critical Analysis
Zora Neale Hurston was born in Eatonville, Florida. When Hurston turned
fourteen she left her hometown to work as a maid and traveled with Gilbert and Sullivan
theatrical troupe. She entered Howard University in 1923, and shortly after she published
her first short story in Stylus, which was the university literary magazine. After winning a
scholarship to Barnard College in New York City in 1925, she studied anthropology under
one of the most renowned anthropologists of the era Franz Boas. She continued her
studies with Boas after graduating in 1928 at Columbia University.
Being in New York and becoming involved in the Harlem Renaissance, she
established friendships with other important black authors and published short stories.
Hurston founded Fire!, with other black writers and Langston Hughes. She returned to
her hometown for folklore, after having the assistance of fellowships and a private grant
from a New York socialite interested in “primitive Negro art.”
The result of the anthropologic field that Hurston has, she wrote Mules and Men.
What the teller calls “lies“, is the folklore, which this story includes. Voodoo practices are
mentioned and described in the story. The information on folklore practices were praised
by critics of that time. Hurston’s first novel was Jonah’s Gourd Vine, which was
published in 1934, combined her knowledge of folklore and biblical themes.
John was an adopted son of a shift-less, scam-prone sharecropper that treated him
very well. His biological father was a white plantation owner, where he worked and
flourished. He was treated better with his adopted family than he was at his actual home.
It was made sure that John had new clothes and an education.
John became beyond his own control, and was compared to the gourd vine and
eventually withers like it in the end. He was young man who loved too many women for
his own good. Being a victim of this, he falls in love with a girl named Lucy and ends up
being with her for as long as they live. She was loyal to John even when he was unfaithful
to her. When he was being hot-headed, she was calm and patient with him and
understanding.
Eventually, John finds himself preaching at a Florida congregation, and despite his
indiscretions, he was doing a lot better than he thought. Even after becoming the popular
pastor of Zion Hope, his sermons and prayers for cleansing rouse the congregation’s
fervor where there, and then John has to confess that though he is a preacher on Sundays.
He considers himself as a sympathetic portrait of a man and his community.
In the future, John and Lucy have seven kids, and they live a happy life. Later in
life, Lucy dies and John is just like Jonah and his “protection shield” is down that she had
provided for him. John has realized that faith, tolerance, and good intentions cannot
resolve the tension between the spiritual and the physical.
What I should like to conclude wit is the hypothesis that one reason Zora Neale
Hurston was attracted to the scientific conceptualization of her racial experience during
the late twenties and early thirties was its prima facie offering of a structure for black
Folklore (Hemenway 212).
Unquestionably, Their Eyes Were Watching God is the prototypical Black novel of
affirmation; it is the most successful, convincing, and exemplary novel of Blacklove that
we have (Jordan 6-7).
It might first seem natural for a preacher’s daughter to meet up with emotional
difficulties when moving from Christianity to African derived Hoodoo (Southerland 25).
Here in [“Jonah’s Gourd Vine”] there springs, with validity and vitality a fresh
note which, to this commentator, is unique. As a matter of fact, not even excepting
Langston Hughes, it is doubtful if there is any literary precedent for the particular type of
accomplishment that characterizes “Jonah’s Gourd Vine.” (Hurst 7) The author’s
treatment of whites is as natural and without change of key as it would need to be if she is
to succeed in keeping universality the dominant note of her book (8).
“Jonah’s Gourd Vine” can be called without fear of exaggeration the most vital
and original novel about the American Negro that has yet been written by a member of the
Negro race. No amount of special knowledge of her subject, however, could have made
“Jonah’s Gourd Vine” other than a mediocre novel if it were not for Miss Hurston’s
notable talents as a storyteller (Wallace 6-7).
sorry. guess i didnt expect comments but uhm the paper isnt finished yett.duhh. thats whyy i saved it so i can print it off else where
Go ahead and save it. You will get a B-. You didn’t cite enough. There is alot of info in there that is obviously from a book with no reference to where it came from. Your MLA formatting is pretty bad. But you look like you tried, so unless your teacher is a dick you will get a High C or Low B.
I want to go back to college but don’t have the money to do so. I applied for financial aid, but I can’t receive grants, just loans.
I’ve heard from several people that school loans are unnecessary due to how many scholarships there are available.
My concern is, I don’t want to blindly fill out scholarship forms without knowing if I really have a chance to win any.
Those of you who HAVE received scholarships before, I’m wondering if you can give me some advice as to which scholarships would I have a good chance of getting and, also, where to find them.
Thanks

I’m currently in my last year of college and would really like to find some scholarships for college, but my problem is that I’m in the percentage of people who just don’t get recognized. What I mean by that is, I’m 21, female, white, and come from a middle class home. This isn’t a racist thing at all, but it is so hard finding money for school because I’m not a minority or from a specifically hard background. My dad works for the auto industry and I guess my family is considered middle to lower class these days because of how he is barely holding on to his job. When I get my fafsa and stuff done the numbers come out to make my parents look like they have money, but that is only because they have had to take money out of my dad’s retirement just to live on. I’ve been trying to get any money for school since high school, but so far have only gotten 1 scholarship (and it was one that everyone got). I’ve applied to so many scholarships, but I’m just not unique enough to get them. I graduated with a 3.8 in high school and currently have a 3.4 in college, but my college is a small private school with no real programs to work with to raise my appeal for scholarships. In order to support myself I have a part time job that takes up all my free time, so I’m not able to expand my volunteering experience. My school only offers one scholarship a year and it is very very hard to get. The school has given me grants, but they are barely anything and even when my family explained our financial hardships they still didn’t raise it. I just don’t know where to find money these days. I have tried fastweb.com and other scholarship sites, tried getting random grants, tried talking to the financial aid dept at school, but it’s so hard. So how can a young, white, female, who is not the first in her family to go to college, from a middle class family, with an avg gpa, and not much time to volunteer…supposed to find money to pay for college?
I live on my own (I live on the west coast and my parents are in the midwest). My dad doesn’t work for a big company…there are like 3 employees and the owner sometimes doesn’t even let them cash their checks for a week, because he doesn’t have the money…so I doubt there is any money in that for my school. I don’t even work enough hours at my job to get health insurance (which thankfully I have through my school), but my job is also for a non-profit type benefit (ironically the money goes to help financial aid for students in a network of private elementary and high schools). I’ve been at my college 3 years already and have a bunch of student loan debt already so I really want to finish and get my degree here.
oh yeah….my parents still claim me as a dependent (many of the loans are in their name, so my mom believes they have the right to claim me. And I know they need the tax break more than me).
With that high of a GPA you could have gotten a transfer scholarship and gone to a bigger school but you do have quite the dilemma. You can ask your dad to look into any scholarships that his job offers to the children of workers or you can look into getting a job that offers tuition reimbursement. That is where as long as you are in good standing with the company (work on time, no complaints) your job will refund you on tuition and fees.
Good Luck.
…..Given the type of work you do I would serously talk to someone at my job to see if they know of anything that can help you. You cannot file independant if you are really a dependant (that could come back on you). I would say to find a new job that could offer the tuition reimbursment (unless you plan to keep your job after graduation) or you can try to locate some scholarships that are given for your degree. In my state there are grants that are offered to students with high GPA’s you might want to go to see a financial aid adviser to see if there is anything out there that you qualify for that you have not been applying for.
This should help you understand my situation. I will be attending the University of Michigan starting in the winter 2007 semester and I do not have any money left over after attending a community college for two years while living at home. After the community college, I will have two unsubsidized loans on my tab which means they will have crazy interest building up if I do not pay them off soon. They total about $5,000 right now. I am thinking about obtaining one of those loans you see on television ($40,000) to pay for the two unsubsidized loans along with tuition and room and board (on campus)for U of M. I was also thinking of taking out a big loan because my parents make too much money to get any kind of grant money and the unsubsidized loans just aren’t enough. Also, even if I tried to win one of those scholarships from fastweb.com, it would not be enough to cover around $23,000 per year (two years for me) worth of expenses for U of M.
Note: I am responsible! Thanks!
First of all, I would be leery of any substandard loan that you see advertized on TV. Chances are, the interest is higher than what you are paying on your current unsub loans. Get all your student loans through your schools fin aid office. Most of which are sponsored by the Dept of Education. They are not in the business of making money, but helping you get quality loans for your education.
If the school isn’t offering you enough in loans grants and scholarships to cover the cost of your tuition, room and board, consider going to a less expensive school along with getting a part time job.
Good rule of thumb when borrowing is not to take more than what you would expect to earn your first year out of school. Example:
A Dr. with a total debt of $100,000 to be a okay because he would expect to earn that upon graduating. A future teacher borrowing that much would not be good unless they could expect to earn that right out of college. Highly unlikely. (Also, be aware a $40,000 student loan would earn a payment of about $425.00 a month)
You asked about experiences…
My friend borrowed $40,000 for her first year of Pharmacy school. She, like you, had 2 years under her belt and was absolutely thrilled to get accepted. But as it was, life happened and a couple of pregnancies and 1 miscarriage later she flunked out. Now she’s got nothing except a bad transcript and a $40,000 loan. Which she can’t affort to pay back. Oh, and a baby too.
The school was very forgiving and said she could get back in the program at any time, but of course she would have to fork over another $40,000 to take and pay for all those courses again. She would then have to borrow another 40K for her second year of school as well. See the cycle?
Good Luck!
First all I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity you offer to any one to be granted. As you can see from my CV I earned a BSc degree in networking and data communication. During the three years of study at the university, I had received rigorous theoretical and practical training in Networking and data communication .I worked for Ethiopian In statute of Agricultural Research under Forestry research Center for around 2 years as network technician. Currently I have been worked as Junior IT expert at Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp). My responsibilities are much more extended that what I was serving at the forestry Research Center.
I would like to be granted the NFP because by winning this precious scholarship I can take part in my MSc program of Geo-Information Science at Wageningen University, the Netherlands .The reason for choosing this specific Master program is comes from various reasons. First this MSc program is extremely suitable with my interest and I believe that continue my studies in order to gain knowledge and experience by academic research. I believe a master degree in GIS would offer me the possibility of receiving the complete picture of all aspect of the field. In addition to this in men dominating society, I have also strong desire to be a role model women researcher in the field of GIS .Secondly reason, I will get a chance to through NFP scholarship to interact with students from diverse professional, social and cultural backgrounds drawn from all over the world. In addition having a chance to study in the Netherlands means I will have opportunity to approach and experience one of the best educational system in the world.
The current status in the development of GIS in our country is far from what the world is reached so I believe obtaining a master’s degree will provide the necessary background to anticipate and react to ever changing GIS development.
Just to give you a gist of my personal traits, I am motivated and self driven individual who functions effectively under pressure. I am very ambitious and my ambition is matched by strong collaborative sprit. I enjoy helping others as well as learning from others when ever the opportunity is afforded. I can quickly adapt to the changing circumstances of the work environment, and also to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultures and back grounds. I am looking forward to the opportunity that the grant will offer me with more opportunities to study with people of with more opportunity to study people of different social and cultural back grounds
I have one suggestion, and that is refrain from using the word "I" as often as you have.Use your
Imagination to rewrite some of your sentences in a way that the word "I",is not the first word of sentence. There are errors in syntax that should be corrected. The last sentence is one example.
You have used people and opportunity twice
Yes, I know there are tons of scholarships and grants that are out there for low income families and I would like to apply for one because my family is a low income generating famly, I have kids, and I have an Associate’s and I working on my Bachelor’s. However, I get assistance through the financial aid the government provides, plus student loans and grants, yet I would like to see about getting a grant or scholarship by applying my skills to get approved or win a grant or scholarship so I can use the money on school and or building a home based business and was wanting to know which web site and/or grants are the best for me and would be the most appropriate given my situation. I have the smarts to give to applying and presenting to the grant or scholarship, however I was wanting to know the ones that were worth applying to or which site to go to that I would have more of a chance of getting? If I could get some help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much……….

I received a form from the United States Achivement Academy which says that my son has been nominated to be recognized in their yearbook because he is a honor roll student. They also say there are 4 cash grants for $10.000 each that he might win… Has someone received one of these scholarships? It seems like a scam, but I went to the Better Business Bureau and this company is a BBB member. What do you all think?
From my understanding, they companies make money by selling you the yearbook that you’re son will be in. There’s a lot of things like this. None of them are really bad, and there could be some good that comes out if it. But it’s like an old school phishing operation- they get all your info for their year book, then they sell that info to people who will then market especially to you (a lot of college stuff)- and they’ll try to sell you the book in the process…. but it’s a normal thing and probably this won’t be his last offer like this.
My mother refuses to pay for college unless I do exactly what she wants me to do (premed). I’ve entered an art contest that grants scholarship money to the winner… but it’s not likely that I’ll win.
Do you know of any writing/art contests that grant scholarship money?
and don’t tell me to "talk it out" with my mom crap. i’ve tried it.
I need real solutions.
Did you apply for FAFSA? www.fafsa.ed.gov
Check out fastweb.com for scholarships and check out the schools you applied to, they should have scholarships.
Or consider starting at a community college and work part time so you can pay for it. Hopefully if your mom see’s you doing well and being comitted to your studies she will help.
