I am a 21 male, currently a Junior in college. I am the *6th* person in a middle-class family to go to college or take classes (est. $80K/year income between parents). Because of this, it has become extremely hard to find student loans due to the number of loans we have already taken out. This includes the use of FAFSA.
There are literally thousands of sites out there for scholarships, grants, free money (if there is such a thing nowadays) and everything else to off-set the cost of tuition.
Not that im lazy, but I do not want to spend hours writing random essays in hopes of winning some sort of financial reward. I did this before freshman year and had *0* hits.
Does anyone know of a GOOD site where you can simply APPLY for scholarships/grants/etc.?
YES, I work, but I get paid nothing which would remotely help me in this situation. And my most pressing costs, aside from tuition, are finding funds for a new computer and text books.
move out of your folks home in with another friend ( to get another legal address independently from your folks) and apply for student loans and use the PELL grant
you dont need a new computer- buy a few years old one- get it "cleaned up" and use that
books- buy used ones from other students, via halfbay.com, amazon.com
congrats on furthering your education
good Luck
I am in desperate need of money to fund my education, but in the eyes of the government, my parents make too much money for me to get any assistance. I’ve tried scholarships and I never win anything, and I can’t get a job, and I don’t have the heart to steal textbooks from my school and sell them on eBay.
Would the State or whoever it is that gives grant money give money to ME and my girlfriend (but mostly, me) if we were married? Because we’re independent and all?
I do love her, and we thought of it together because we are both students struggling to get by day to day.
I was also laid off from a job at Target, and it’s been so difficult to find one these days.
HOW OLD ARE YOU? AT 24 YOU ARE CONSIDERED INDEPENDENT AND CAN GET FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.
SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME, MY PARENTS MADE TOO MUCH SO I WAITED TILL I WAS 24 AND NOW IT IS FREE.
DONT MARRY YOUR GIRLFRIEND TO SOLVE A PROBLEM, MARRY HER BECAUSE YOU LOVE HER.
Now, I don’t mean just send incoming emails to Spam, Check, All, & hit delete. That doesn’t work. Below is a following of what I get on multiple, daily basis. Creating Yahoo’s Blocked List only goes up to 500 blocked addresses which is already filled to the max.

Most likely you’re subscribed to a only about a dozen spam mailing lists. One spam mailing list can spam on behalf of dozens of different companies, sending you huge amounts of emails. Per the can spam act these emails should have opt out instructions, follow these instructions. This should cut down on the largest amount of spam.
What I do is maintain two different email addresses. One I use for personal correspondences and so forth, and receiving important email. The other is for spam, and I never use it to receive important email, I just let the spam pile up in my 2nd email address. When websites ask for an email address, I put in my 2nd email address (or don’t even use a real, valid email address at all).
If you don’t use your primary email address on guestbooks, websites, forums, and other places that generate spam lists, eventually your email address will not have been used for so long that it will stop receiving much spam.

MY GRADES R AVERAGE SHOULD I MAKE UP MY D’S?
Well I can totally relate to your situation! I am also the first person in my family to not only attend college, but to graduate and man, the pressure is on!
I did get scholarships that pertained to my major (which is something you can also google if you put in, for example, "fashion design+scholarships" see what comes up). I did this and got some scholarships for my major but I also took out student loans and got grants.
All this is available through the FAFSA web site at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. They will calculate your income and determine how much financial aid you qualify for.
Also, loans are NOT a bad thing. If you want to go to college bad enough, you will use ANY means to make it happen–even if it means having school loans to pay back and trust me, your education deserves nothing less.
I owe around $21,000 in school loans and my payments are going to be around $150 a month! Not bad, huh? There’s also options to put off paying off your loans if you can’t afford it at the time, and to even set your own payments at what YOU can afford!
So don’t be knocking school loans just yet because take it from me, I now have my degree and I’m so happy that I took out those loans because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be graduated right now and working full-time. Trust me, my parents are poor and couldn’t contribute to even my books, let alone tuition, but you know what? I made it happen and they couldn’t be more proud–even if I had to take out loans.
Now the other option is talking to the advisors at FIDM. They are very knowledgable in helping students find financial assistance. There’s even a financial aid office that will help you fill out the FAFSA application! They will help you find scholarships, grants and loans so I would start by calling the school and making an appointment with an advisor AND the financial aid office.
FIDM’s web site is: www.fidm.edu
Hope this helps and good luck at FIDM!
Okay, so I’m applying for the Emory University Scholars scholarship (which will grant me a full ride to Emory if I win) and I have to write an essay the focuses on one or two of my principal intellectual interests. So, the directions for the essay say "write a brief essay about yourself (750 words) that focuses on…." So in the parentheses where it says (750 words), do you think that it will be frowned up if I write maybe like 600 words or something? I know that I shouldnt go OVER the 750 words, but about what does the whole 750 words thing mean? Does it mean, 750 word limit or maybe 750 should be around where you end? PLEASE HELP!!!
DO NOT go under 750 words, it will make you look like a slacker. If its not long enough just find some good filler sentences here or there or add some adjectives and whatnot.
Quick synopsis. I am a student and I was unable to continue school this semester (Spring ‘10) because I have tuition due. I receive financial aid every year, and I was unable to do so because of my class completion rate (from a year ago–had to withdraw b/c of family financial issues). I have a 3.5GPA and I am desperately trying to find a way to pay my school (VCU–Virginia Commonwealth University). I have spoken to my financial aid advisor, but I think she either (A) doesn’t know what she’s doing or (B) doesn’t seem to be concerned. I have no co-signer (literally), and my credit is slightly above America’s average, I’m 22 (so no, I don’t have enough credit history) Does ANYONE know where I can get a loan/scholarship/grant/anything to pay my tuition. I have applied to SEVERAL scholarships on websites, but when you apply to scholarships on the internet, you have a better chance of winning the lottery (or at least that’s how I feel). My school doesn’t offer scholarships for my particular department either (Mass Communications). Any ideas anyone??
education.mypressonline.com – it provides some tips about applying to US federal and state grants for college students.
okay so im gonna be a senior in HS and ive began to look at scholarships and things like that.
my question is this- is a scholarship money that you can use anywhere? or for example if i go to a community college but i win more than my tuition there, is the rest of the winning money able to be used at another school?
and also am i able to apply for scholarships at any time? every year?
(i dont mean like with deadlines, but can i apply for them every new term?)
Well, let’s say that you are awarded a scholarship in the amount of $2000 for two semesters. Let’s also say that you applied for financial aid as well and received pell grants–which do not have to be paid back. If your tuition for one semester winds up being less than the amount of financial aid/scholarships you were awarded for that semester, then you will receive a check for the remainder of the money to do what you want to with.
So, if you received enough financial aid to pay for your school, then you would receive half of your scholarship money in the mail (only half because they split the scholarship in half to accommodate for each semester). Leaving you with $1000 in your pocket, going by the example I proposed above.
And yes, you can apply for scholarships once every year, usually in early springtime/late winter. Usually every year you will qualify for different scholarships that you didn’t qualify for the year before/ vice versa.
Hope this helps!
I am currently a senior in high school and have already been admitted to UC Davis based on ELC. Im set on going to Davis for my college of choice. I have applied for FAFSA and just found out from my CAR (Cal-Grant report) that I will be getting Cal-Grant B , which is about 1500 dollars for books and living expenses i hear for the first year. My family is very poor, making about only 10,000 yearly, and so my ELC = 0. Knowing that, how will I be able to cover the cost for UC Davis? Cal-Grant doesnt provide enough for the first year. Even including Pell Grant, it wont be enough to cover the tuition for Davis (around 22k to 29k i hear?). Will I have to apply for like 15 scholarships and win all of them? :[[[[[

After high school grad im going to go live with my disabled grandparents..its a win for win sitch I get to give back to them what they’ve done for me by staying with them (ultimatly keeping them out of the nursing home at least a another year! or more hopefully!) and go to college at the 2 year about 7 miles away…they get someone to stay with them that they can trust for once..while im going to school only 2 or three days a week hopefully– im going to get part time job at least to pay my bills…i want to get medicare to pay for them someone to sit in while im away..already have a canidate picked out..and i want to take some courses in that too so i can be ready if something were to happen to them as well..ya know the medical or whatever training you have to have to be qualifeid for that medicare job..its like a summer course…anyway was wondering by any chance could there be a scholarship or grant to pay for those classes or even to put a grant towards my schooling or a housing grant to help pay the bills while living with the grandparents? just wondering since there are grants for just about everything!
trying not to take out a loan to fix up the basement..they have no spare bedroom! so i have to turn the basement into one! fun task huh? any advice on this as well much appreciated
also what should they charge me for rent? ect. havent asked them yet ..any opinions?
Well have you filed your FAFSA yet? There may be an option on there, because they do ask who you will be living with, and you may be able to give them your grandparents income information instead, and if so, there will be a question asking if they receive anything due to disabilities. You should definitely be able to get more financial aid just because you won’t be living with your parents. You should look into it and see if you can be filed as your grandparents’ dependent instead of your parents…You may have to legally seperate yourself from your parents (I forget what it is technically called but it is like a divorce from your parents…you are no longer bound to them as far as the government is concerned) but it may be worth it because you will get more aid out of it. However, there may be grants for it, you would have to look into that. You should contact the college you are going to be attending and see if they can help you.
As far as fixing the basement up, since it will only be for two years or so, you shouldn’t take a loan out. Do you live in a place where it gets cold during the winter months? If so, you can buy very cheap space heaters (I have one in my room) that really warm up a room as long as the doors and windows are closed. I do not beleive they cost more than 30 dollars to be honest. You can also just buy an area rug or two since it probably isn’t carpeted, and buy some paint to brighten the room up (if the basement walls are made of stone, this will create a very nice effect. We just redid our bathroom and when we took the wallpaper down, discovered there was brick underneath it. We painted it the same color as the rest of the walls and it really looks amazing). Bring some things from your current room at home to the basement to make things feel more at home for you. Find out if the basement tends to fill up with water when it rains, though, or if there is anything dangerous. You should be able to fix everything under 100 dollars if there isn’t anything serious to fix up–but remember, you won’t be there for long so it might be a waste of money to spend too much fixing the place up.
As far as rent, I don’t think they should charge you anything at all. I don’t know if this would make things awkward for you, but consider the cost of hiring an in home nurse. That is extremely expensive. Or the cost of having to leave home and move to a facility–both emotional and financial. I’m sure they feel much more comfortable and loved to know they will have their grandchild living with them, and you can always offer to help out with groceries. You’ll be paying them by just being there to help when they need it. You shouldn’t have to pay them cash too. And they probably don’t even expect you to pay them, as you are already doing them a huge favor.
Anyways, talk to your college and see what kind of grants and scholarships they give out for this sort of situation. Be clear about the living arrangements, what you will be helping out with and so on, and they will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck with everything.
