with this link below, I don’t understand why it says that in order to receive tuition assistance in IL, someone must be on active duty status for at least a year? Does that include basic training and tech school?? View link below…

The way the GI BILL worked when I first entered the military is this: The soldier contributed $100.00 a month for the first year, after that the SM contribution is done. When the SM decided to draw on his/her GI BILL entitlement, the ARMY paid the rest. If I remember correctly, my complete entitlement was $15,000. Yes, I have been in for awhile! With the RESERVES/GUARD, you can get tuition assistance through your unit. It has to be approved by the SM’s chain of command. Usually not a problem, as long the SM is in good standing with the unit…attending Battle Assemblies, duty, etc. This is on top of the GI BILL benefit received by the SM. Hope this helps you out!!!

Yes, that should include basic and tech training. It means the state is giving TA for a Nat Grd/Res called up to serve on active duty for a year or more. Good for them, the Reserves deserve it.

Your first seconds of active duty are when you sign your active duty contract, and get on a plane to go to Boot Camp. Basically, you have to be in the Reserves or Guard for a year before you get access to your G.I. Bill.
