In the summer of 2009 I will begin an 1,100 mile solo paddling journey in an effort to establish a scholarship in my fathers name and memory. This scholarship will be created through the Swain County Schools Foundation created in 2003 to make a positive difference in our schools and our students. If you’d like to support this effort, go to http://paddlingforapurpose.blogspot.com/
Thank you very much!

(Fort Stewart, GA) Staff Sergeant Dameon Wilson is the first to earn a college degree through the Wounded Warrior Scholarship, which was started two years ago.
He said, Colorado Technical University called us and said I was awarded the scholarship, and that was one of the best days of my life.
To understand how far hes come, you need to know where his journey began. On December 27, 2007, his vehicle was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Iraq. He described his injury, Shrap metal went into my left eye…and I lost my left eye.”
After a short medical stay in Germany and a month and a half receiving medical care at Walter Reed in Washington, DC, SSG Wilson returned to Fort Stewart to face a whole new set of challenges, doing my online studies and recovering and having my kids at home all at oncebut I made it through.
And we he said he made it through, hes being humble. SSG Wilson made earned his Associates Degree, which typically takes 2 years, in just nine months. He attributes his success to two things, Faith in God and hard work.
As he continues to work toward a Bachelors Degree and ultimately a Doctorate in Information Technology, he hopes his young children will someday understand what he went through and learn from his experience, In the long run, I hope that they do look back and see that their father didn’t stop because he got injured, didn’t want to feel sorry for himself – and they push themselves to achieve higher goals also.”
Because a dance with death, three surgeries and some tough college courses werent enough to stop their Daddy.
The Wounded Warrior Scholarship is awarded to 25 soldiers each year. It was created two years ago and SSG Wilson is the first to earn his degree with the scholarship.
